Ridge Preservation

Ridge preservation occurs when a tooth is lost.  Bone is placed within the socket to facilitate the healing of the area to prevent future defects due to the loss of a tooth or teeth.

The material placed in the remaining socket can be composed of different types:

Autograft-Bone grafts that are transplanted directly from one area of an individual’s skeleton into his or her own jaw are called autogenous bone grafts, or bone autografts.

Allograft-Bone graft that comes from a donor is called allograft bone. Allograft bone usually comes from bone banks that harvest the bone from cadavers. The types of allograft bone used for spine surgery include fresh frozen and lyophilized (freeze dried). The bone is cleaned and disinfected to reduce the possibility of disease transmission from donor to recipient.

During this process the bone placed into the socket and surgically closed.  The healing process takes 3-6 months. When healing has completed either an implant or a dental bridge is placed. Without this process there is a great possibility that the bone will collapse and be difficult to repair cosmetically.
